Велика війна була першим глобальним конфліктом, у якому були задіяні всі континенти, навіть якщо самі битви відбувалися лише в Азії, Африці, Європі та Океанії. У війні брали участь 32 держави, а понад 60 млн. осіб було мобілізовано. Воєнні дії велися між Союзниками — Англією, Францією, Італією, а з 1917 р. США і Центральними державами — Німеччиною, Австро-Угорщиною, Османською імперією і Болгарією, на фронтах у різних частинах світу. До обох сторін долучалися ще десятки держав, етнічних та національних груп. Основні події розгорталися на Західному та Східному фронтах у Європі. Однак важливі воєнні операції відбувалися і на інших територіях — зокрема на Італійському фронті та на Балканах. Поза межами Європи головні кампанії розгорталися на Близькому Сході, Кавказі, різних частинах Африки, Далекому Сході та Океанії.
Воєнні дії завершилася перемогою Союзників і підписанням перемир’я у Комп’єнському лісі 11 листопада 1918 р. У 1919–23 рр. відбулося підписання низки мирних договорів, які закріпили повоєнну міжнародну систему держав та кордонів. Але цей процес супроводжувався громадянськими війнами, локальними воєнними конфліктами та революціями.
У Першій світовій війні загинуло близько 10 млн. солдатів з обох сторін, понад 21 млн. зазнали поранень, а близько 8 млн. потрапили у полон чи зникли безвісти.
Great War was the first global conflict which involved all continents although the battles took place only in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. 32 states were involved in the conflict, and over 60 mln. of people were mobilized. Military actions involved the Allies – England, France, Italy, and since 1917 USA and Central states – Germany, Austro-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria at the front in different parts of the world. Both parties were joined by the dozens of states, ethnic and national groups. The epicenter of the key military operations was Western and Eastern European fronts. However, important military operations took place also in the other parts – namely on the Italian front and in the Balkans. Outside Europe the main campaigns deployed in Middle East, Caucasus, different parts of Africa, Far East and Oceania.
Military actions ended with the Allies’ victory and with the Compiègne armistice signature on November 11, 1918 . In 1919-1923 a number of peace treaties were signed, which consolidated the postwar international system of states and boundaries. However, this process was accompanied by the civil wars, local military conflicts, and revolutions.
About 10 mln. soldiers died in the First World War from both sides, over 21 mln. soldiers were injured and about 8 mln. were taken prisoners and have gone missing.
